Supporting Oral Health During Pregnancy

During pregnancy, a woman’s hormonal changes can increase her risk of developing gum disease or bleeding gums (pregnancy gingivitis). Bacteria within the oral cavity, both good and bad, is passed from mother to baby. Dental and medical health professionals can partner in promoting good maternal dental health to increase the likelihood of baby having healthy teeth and gums too.

Addressing the dental needs of expectant mothers

Medical providers are in the unique position of seeing their pregnant patients frequently. Some expectant mothers may be afraid that dental procedures are unsafe for their baby. You may be able to help your patients overcome their concerns by referring them to their dentist and emphasizing that:

  • Dental checkups are safe and recommended during pregnancy.
  • Extensive dental treatments for oral conditions that include anesthesia are safe.
  • X-rays during pregnancy are safe with the correct protection.
